Program Sekolah Tunas Hijau (PSTH) Phase III – Perak: Ke Arah Sifar Penggunaan Plastik Sekali Guna dalam kalangan Warga Sekolah
Program Sekolah Tunas Hijau (PSTH) is a flagship environmental education initiative that empowers schools to cultivate sustainable lifestyles and environmental stewardship among students and educators. Following its successful implementation in Selangor, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Kedah, the programme was expanded to Perak under Phase III, focusing on reducing single-use plastic consumption through the adoption of the 5R principles — Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle.
PSTH Phase III – Perak (Series 1), implemented from March 2023 to February 2025, involved 125 selected secondary schools across 12 districts in Perak. The programme successfully enhanced awareness and action on single-use plastic waste management, achieving more than 80% improvement in environmental awareness among school communities, a 57.6% reduction in plastic waste generation and a reduction in carbon footprint of 629,973.55 kg CO₂e (equivalent to 629.97 tonnes CO₂e) over a two-year period.
Building on these achievements, PSTH Phase III – Perak (Series 2), which runs from March 2025 to February 2027 was introduced to strengthen, sustain and expand the impact of the programme. The current phase engages 103 selected secondary schools throughout Perak, involving 206 teacher facilitators and 1,854 student leaders as the programme’s core implementation team. Through a wider outreach approach, the programme is expected to extend its impact to an estimated 2,575 additional teachers and 51,500 students, fostering a broader culture of sustainability and responsible plastic waste management across participating schools.
Through environmental education, capacity building, innovation and continuous monitoring, PSTH continues to position schools as catalysts for positive environmental change. By strengthening sustainable practices and empowering future generations to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours, the programme contributes meaningfully towards Malaysia’s sustainability agenda, circular economy aspirations and low-carbon future.
