Empowering Indigenous Communities Through Buy Back Guarantee Initiative
The Buy-Back Guarantee Initiative is an innovative community-based model under Malaysia's Social Forestry Initiative that demonstrates how forest conservation can go hand in hand with community empowerment. By engaging Orang Asli communities in the collection, propagation and cultivation of native forest seedlings through community-managed nurseries, the initiative creates sustainable livelihood opportunities while strengthening local participation in restoring and protecting Malaysia's forests. !
Implemented in collaboration with the Pahang State Forestry Department (JPNP) and Malaysia Rail Link Sdn. Bhd. (MRL) through the Rail to Roots: Rehabilitation of Degraded Forests & Capacity Building initiative, the programme equips participants with nursery infrastructure, technical training and continuous guidance. Through the Buy-Back Guarantee model, seedlings cultivated by the community are guaranteed to be purchased for approved forest rehabilitation projects, providing a reliable source of income while ensuring a sustainable supply of quality native tree species for restoration efforts.
The initiative was introduced to the Orang Asli community of Kampung Hulu Chemperoh, Janda Baik, Pahang, where participants have successfully produced approximately 17,000 native forest seedlings. To date, 3,000 seedlings have been purchased through MRL's sponsorship and planted for the rehabilitation of degraded forest at Compartment 46, Lentang Permanent Forest Reserve, while the remaining seedlings continue to support ongoing and future forest restoration initiatives.
